About this course:

Explains how Dame Alice Owen’s School (Sunday Times state secondary school of the Year 2017) started a win-win alumni programme (#theowensway!) with no budget, giving you the opportunity to hear top tips and pitfalls in setting up one yourself and to discuss any issues which relate to your individual School!   It includes practical advice on financial, technical and staffing solutions, ways to recruit alumni, managing expectations, the importance of data, events that work, external support and long term planning.

Since 2011, from having 500 former student contacts on an Excel spreadsheet, Owen’s are now in regular contact with 4,000 Old Owenians registered on a password protected website, publish 2 online alumni newsletters and hold 2 events a year, as well as provide marketing support for reunions.

Adopting a “Friend raising” strategy, their alumni volunteer their time to talk to current students about their careers, mentor students and provide work experience.  They also contribute financially by making donations when the time is right for them.  You can read about their alumni programme via this link: http://damealiceowens.web-intouch.com/ which also gives full access to their newsletters.

Feedback from recent presentations:

“A very useful introduction into the stages to setting up an Alumni programme in a state school.  The advice given was clear and relevant and all my questions were addressed within the context of our school.” Ben Clemson, Burgate School.

“Thank you so much for running such a comprehensive and well set out INSET training with me over the phone. The PDF PPT was an excellent tool to guide me through what it was you were speaking about and really offered up a number of different avenues which I had not even considered! A fantastic and really well structured INSET which has sparked a real buzz for the alumni network already.” Robert Freeland, Sandringham School

“All essential points were clearly explained: background, process, "do’s and "don't’s. It was very clear you wanted to share your experience and expertise and to help other schools, not just brag about your enviable success.” Charles Cross, Beaumont School

“Friendly and accessible presentation, catering for complete novices as well as those with some experience of alumni relations.” Anna Hobbs, Presdales School

Mandy English

Mandy English specialised in Direct Marketing for Marks and Spencer in the 1990’s running campaigns for the business and reporting to Director level.  She has since had experience in state and independent Schools as clerk, governor, fundraiser and parent and joined Dame Alice Owen’s School in 2009 after helping redesign their website.

In a new post as Communications Officer, she improved relationships with parents, managed the website and supported their 400th anniversary events and fundraising committees with project management and marketing skills.  She initiated the alumni programme in the lead up to the 2013 celebrations.

These were held at the Royal Albert Hall (400th concert), St Paul’s Cathedral (400th thanksgiving service), Mansion House (400th guest reception), St Albans Cathedral (400th carol service) and in school; 400th Ball, 400th Drama Production, 400th Sports events and a Historical Exhibition.  The £1million fund raising campaign was successful, resulting in the opening of the schools new Science facility in 2014.

Focusing on Alumni Relations, she now manages the school alumni programme, gives presentations to other state schools to help them start their own programme and supports the schools Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award participants.  In addition she remains a governor at a local independent prep school, is trustee of a medical charity and has two daughters at Cambridge and Durham.
